Photographing the San Miguel Archangel Mission

The Mission San Miguel Archangel is located in the hamlet of San Miguel, CA about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on Highway 101 – The Camino Real.  It is still a working Catholic Church, but also shows its rich history.  Stop here and this is what you might see.

There is a really nice museum.  It includes this wooden original San Miguel that is over 150 years old.

There is a nice courtyard and of course, the common fountain found at almost all of the missions.

It is really interesting to see these old missions and no crucifix prominently displayed.  Here the focal point is a more modern San Miguel and the “all seeing eye of God.”

There was an old cemetery and the old bell tower.  The rock work throughout the mission was crude, yet beautiful.

Even though it was a very old building, there was plenty of color and fun details.

It was Christmas season, so the simple front door was accented with decorations.  Sometimes the barest of subjects are most powerful.

We have now photographed 13 of the 21 missions.  We plan to complete the project in 2014.  See our other blogs about the California missions.
